2006 New York Malanka This past January, the New York City Chapter held its second annual celebration of Ukrainian New Years, Malanka, at the upstate resort of Soyuzivka. The weekend began with a Pub Night held in the Main House Bar. Live entertainment was provided in the form of guitar duo Zuki & Friend. Classic rock and roll tunes were played until the early hours of the morning. It was a small crowd, but in the words of the band “it was a fun crowd.” The next evening, the Malanka Ball wall held. The night began with a short cocktail hour where guests could mingle and exchange greetings and best wishes for the coming New Year. Dinner was proceeded by an invocation by former UESA president, Fr. George Bazylevsky. Once all of the remarks were concluded, the New Year’s festivities began in earnest. The music was provided by the orchestra “Fata Morgana.” As some of you may note, Fata Morgana has performed previously at several UESA events. The music and dancing continued to early in the morning. Along the way, the guests were also entertained by a short kolomeyka provided by some of the members of the Syzokryli Dance Ensemble. In general, it appears that everyone was very satisfied with the overall event. Several people had commented on positive reflection which the revival of this event had on both the organizing chapters and UESA as whole. The New York City Chapter is fully committed to ensuring the success and long term viability of this event. We are always eager to hear comments and suggestion from our members and their guests which will aid us in continually improving this event. We would like to thank everyone that attended this year’s event and hope to see an even larger group of people joining us next year at Soyuzivka. In closing, we would also like to extend our deepest thanks to Soyuzivka itself for providing such an elegant environment for the event and for assisting the chapter in the organization and advertisement of the event.
